Counter-Narrative Media

They control the story about your community. Build your own media to tell the truth.

Pressure addressed: psychological, cultural

Time: Ongoing content production

People: Content creators, editors, community contributors

Resources: Phone/camera, platform, consistent commitment

About this tool

Every news story about your community is filtered through people who don't live there. The crime gets covered; the community response doesn't. The 'expert' quoted has never walked your streets. Counter-narrative media builds community capacity to tell its own stories.

How to do it

  1. Define your voice

What perspective does your community need represented? What stories aren't being told? What's your editorial stance?

  2. Choose your medium

Start with what you can sustain. Weekly Instagram better than monthly magazine you'll abandon. Match ambition to capacity.

  3. Build consistency

Regular output builds audience. Sporadic posting loses them. Decide a schedule and stick to it.

  4. Develop community contributors

One person burns out. Build a network of people who can contribute stories, photos, perspectives.

  5. Engage, don't just broadcast

Community media serves community. Listen, respond, cover what matters to people, not just what interests you.

Before you start

  • Content creation skills
  • Platform access
  • Sustained commitment

Implementation guidance

Starting point

  • Regular publication schedule maintained over months/years
  • Multiple contributors from community
  • Clear editorial voice and standards
  • Growing audience engagement
  • Stories picked up by mainstream media
  • Sustainable resource model

Building on it

  • Regular content production
  • Some community engagement
  • Consistent platform presence

Advanced practice

  • Sporadic posting that fades out
  • One person's blog claiming to represent community
  • Reactive only, no proactive storytelling

Abandoned community media projects teach communities that such efforts fail. One person claiming community voice without community input can misrepresent. Reactive-only media lets opponents set the agenda, you're always responding to their frame.
