About this tool

Economic strangulation works when you can't see your own situation clearly. Money comes in, money goes out, and you never quite know if you're growing or drowning. That uncertainty keeps you reactive. Vulnerable. A daily cash record changes that.

How to do it

  1. Get a notebook

Dedicate it to your business. Write your name on the cover.

  2. Record today's purchases

Three columns: Item, Quantity, Cost. Include transport. Total the column.

  3. Record today's sales

    Same format. Total the column.

  4. Calculate profit

Sales minus purchases. Circle that number. That's what matters.

  5. Repeat daily

Weekly totals. Monthly totals. Now you see the pattern, and can act on it.

Before you start

  • Basic numeracy or access to someone who can count and write
  • A notebook and pen

Implementation guidance

Starting point

  • Daily recording without fail, purchases, sales, profit
  • Weekly and monthly totals calculated
  • Pricing decisions informed by actual cost data
  • Transport and hidden costs included
  • Savings target set as percentage of profit

Building on it

  • Recording most days (5+ per week)
  • Weekly totals calculated
  • Some pricing decisions informed by data

Advanced practice

  • Recording only when things feel bad
  • No totals calculated
  • Notebook started but abandoned

Sporadic recording without analysis creates false confidence. An abandoned notebook confirms the narrative that financial management is 'too complicated for people like me', exactly what economic strangulation wants you to believe.

Examples

Karachi, Pakistan

Anwar, a street barber earning €2.88/day. Two children out of education. Dependent on short-term loans.

Within 9 months of daily cash recording: 40% revenue growth, 72% profit growth. Now owns a barber shop, employs 4 people, both children in school.
