About this tool

Healthcare systems are designed by people who've never had to navigate them desperate and afraid. Forms in languages you don't read. Eligibility rules that seem designed to exclude. Cultural assumptions that don't match yours. Fear of immigration enforcement in medical settings.

How to do it

  1. Map the system

What healthcare is available? What are eligibility requirements? What rights exist? Build comprehensive knowledge.

  2. Train navigators

Community members who learn the system and can guide others. Language skills. Cultural competence. Advocacy skills.

  3. Create referral pathway

How do people access navigators? Word of mouth, community organisations, religious institutions.

  4. Accompany and advocate

Not just information, physical accompaniment when needed. Advocacy when systems fail.

  5. Document and challenge barriers

Systematic exclusion should be documented and challenged. Individual navigation plus systemic advocacy.

Before you start

  • Healthcare system knowledge
  • Navigator volunteers
  • Referral network

Implementation guidance

Starting point

  • Comprehensive system knowledge maintained
  • Trained navigators available across community
  • Clear referral pathways
  • Physical accompaniment when needed
  • Systemic barriers documented and challenged
  • Measurable increase in healthcare access

Building on it

  • Basic system knowledge compiled
  • Some trained navigators
  • Referral system emerging

Advanced practice

  • Outdated or incorrect information shared
  • Navigators who can't actually navigate
  • Individual help without systemic challenge

Wrong information about healthcare eligibility or process can cause people to miss care they're entitled to or face enforcement they feared. Navigators without real knowledge waste time and erode trust. Individual navigation without challenging barriers leaves the system unchanged for those who follow.
