Community Needs Empathy Map
Map what your community hears, sees, thinks, feels, and says. Then map their pains.
Pressure addressed: economic, cultural, psychological
Time: One 30-minute session produces actionable insights
People: 5-15 people from the same community
Resources: Large paper, post-it notes, markers, 5-15 participants, a facilitator
About this tool
When a community is under pressure, collective understanding fractures. Survival becomes individualised. Everyone deals with their own version of the same structural problem without connecting the dots. An empathy map fixes that.
How to do it
Draw the map
Face in centre. Six sections around it: HEAR, SEE, THINK & FEEL, SAY & DO, PAINS, SOLUTIONS.
Map HEAR and SEE
What do they hear from media, authorities, neighbours? What do they see happening? Post-it notes in each section.
Map THINK & FEEL
What do they really think? Feel privately? This is where deeper truths emerge.
Map SAY & DO
What do they actually say and do? Note gaps between private thoughts and public behaviour.
Map PAINS
Biggest frustrations? Obstacles? What keeps them awake? Let this section flow.
Generate SOLUTIONS
What can we do? What's already working? Vote on most promising. Commit to trying one within two weeks.
Before you start
- 5-15 people willing to spend 30 minutes together
- Large paper, post-it notes, markers
Implementation guidance
Starting point
- Full six-section map completed with diverse participation
- Everyone contributed at least one insight
- Pains identified as structural, not individual complaints
- Actionable solutions with specific timelines
- Map used as ongoing reference for decisions
Building on it
- Map completed with pains and solutions sections filled
- Core group participated actively
- At least one solution being acted on
Advanced practice
- Map created by one person 'on behalf of' the community
- Pains identified but no solutions generated
- Pains framed as individual failings
An empathy map without genuine participation is one person's assumptions dressed as collective knowledge. Identifying pains without moving to solutions reinforces helplessness, you've named the problem without building agency to address it.
Examples
Karachi, Pakistan
PTP mini-MBA used empathy mapping with micro-entrepreneurs to understand customer needs under economic marginalisation.
Javed, a fruit seller, relocated his stall based on pedestrian patterns identified through customer empathy mapping, sold out his entire stock by afternoon on day one.
